About us

Géza Szabó Sr. (1895-1968 ) got his goldsmith certificate in 1930, and was the one to put down the foundation of ÉremVerde®. During his time, cast, minted and embossed medals, plaques and ingots were produced. In 1984 his son, Géza Szabó restarted the production of minted medals on the old equipment and machines.

Over the years, the medals he made have reached all parts of the country and even beyond the borders. He renovated the workshop, the machines and the technology. During his operation, ÉremVerde® became a nationally known and recognized company. Nearly 3,000 different commemorative medals have been made by his hands. Since his death, his son, Tamás continues the activity he has started so far.

In addition to the continuous technological developments, hand engraving and craftsmanship are still crucial in tool making, which makes the medals made in our workshop unique. In ÉremVerde® medals are made based on the designs of the country’s best sculptors with the most diverse themes. This workshop provides the base for the new generation of sculptors who, taking advantage of the above mentioned technology, have revived Hungarian medal art. Tamás Szabó tutored the subject of Numismatics at the Department of Sculpture of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts for nearly 25 years. Together with the Kossuth Prize-winning sculptor Pál Kő, they developed the teaching methodology of the subject of Numismatics. The diverse and wide range of images and forms together with the continued evolution of medal making helped the revival and flourishing of Hungarian medal art.

The workshop mainly produces minted medals, the quality of which is indicated by the fact that the Hungarian Numismatic Collectors’ own medals have also been made in ÉremVerde® since 1988. The diameters of the finished minted medals range from 10 mm to 100 mm. They are made of gold, silver and bronze, for medals, badges, pins and dry stamps. Nowadays, medal minting is experiencing a renaissance, which is also confirmed by our reference list (link). The characteristics of the medals made in the workshop is that they are unique, can be issued in small quantity too, durable – can be continuously re-minted for up to 100 years – masterpieces of the industrial arts made of precious metal and bronze.

In recent years, the workshop has expanded its activities by producing cast plaques, unique awards, and commemorative jewelry.

In recent years, the export of medals has become increasingly more significant. Thus, the medals made in the workshop have reached Great Britain, Belgium and the neighbouring countries. We are especially proud that the designs and medals to commemorate Pope Francis’ visit to Transylvania were made in ÉremVerde®.

Ex libris

The ex libris of the linocut by László Szentessy – a graphic artist also known for the Pécsi Dénár – leads us to a later era of numismatics, which he created in 2006 after visiting the minting workshop of Géza Szabó in Szeged. We can see a so-called ball press on it. The artist also had the chance to see the old press there among Géza Szabó’s old tools. This screw press was invented by the French in 1629. It was already in operation in Körmöcbánya in 1710. From 1714, a royal decree prescribed its use in the Habsburg Empire and it was the means of coinage and numismatics until 1810. In addition to Géza Szabó’s family coat of arms, the ex libris also shows minted medals and minting dies.
